Why seek psychotherapy?
Most people experience anxiety or depression at some time in their life and have to contend with pain and disappointment. Other difficult feelings include sadness, feelings of inadequacy, and difficulties making or sustaining good relationships. Signs of depression include low mood and a number of other symptoms described here. Anxiety disorders include generalised anxiety disorder, panic, disorder, and obsessive compulsive disorder. Sympoms of anxiety are described here.
Often these feelings can be resolved without outside help, but sometimes therapy can be helpful. This may be because feelings from the past which one is not aware of are affecting one’s emotional life. There are aspects of our state of mind which although have a deep effect upon us are largely hidden, that is they are unconscious. Psychotherapy can allow people to understand these hidden aspects of themselves and come to know themselves better.
Psychoanalytic psychotherapy is an effective treatment for a range of psychological disorders. It can contribute to mental and physical health, to a sense of well-being and to an ability to manage life more successfully.
Whether it is the treatment of choice for you depends on various factors. It is often helpful to have one or more preliminary consultations before deciding whether psychotherapy is the right approach for you.
